Yuliana

Dwell is a registered social housing provider with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and we house individuals and families from the social housing register.

One of the families referred to Dwell this way were Yuliana and her family who moved from Porirua to their first Dwell home in 2015. They had been living in a Housing New Zealand home following their arrival from Colombia.

The street they were living on made them feel unsafe and they had experienced threats of violence. Seeking a safer home in a new area, they were approved for a transfer and were subsequently offered a two bedroom Dwell home.

The family were delighted with their new home, especially the location. Yuliana’s two daughters aged 10 attend the school just across the street and the family felt much safer in their new neighbourhood.

“Dwell as a landlord were great. We were really happy to move into their home and felt very safe.”

About one year into their tenancy Yuliana’s situation changed with the arrival of a new baby. The new addition to the family meant that their current home had become too small and they needed more space in order for the family to live well. Dwell supported the family to apply for consideration for a transfer via the social housing register with MSD which was subsequently approved.

It was important Yuliana, her two daughters and new baby to stay close to the area they lived to ensure her daughters could remain at the same school and that they remained close to their support networks, their family and friends who live nearby.

During the time that Yuliana was awaiting a transfer a Dwell property became vacant, close to Island Bay. Dwell considered this to be a great option for Yuliana and her family as it was close to their existing home and had the extra bedroom that the family needed.

On viewing, the family were overjoyed with the property and were so excited they wanted to move in immediately.

“We love our new home, there is so much space. We now have a garden which we enjoy when the Wellington weather allows it! The area is very community and family orientated. My parents live close by. It is helpful for our family to have support close by, my parents help with my children and visit regularly for family get togethers”.

Since moving into their home they have settled well into the neighbourhood and community, her daughters are able to attend the same school. When asked about the best things about their new home Yuliana’s daughters both agree that extra space for the family has given them the most benefits.

“We now have more room for our friends to visit and we have play dates at home. We love it!”
